Mystery Medieval Ship

One of the interesting extras which came with a rather fantastic bargain lot of Lamming Medieval figures from ebay was this small metal ship.

The hull length is around 4cm.

Bill Lamming did do Medieval cogs for use with his Medieval Campaign Rules but my recollection from seeing them on his stand at shows (I never had any) was that thy were really tiny. There is what looks to be a manufacturer's mark on the bottom of the hull, but I haven't been able to make it out.

So if anyine recognises the model or can thriow any light on it, I'd be pleased to here from you.

The model is a bit nicer than it appears from the photos, but it is very rough.

Jack Alexander - Junks and Korean warships

A very welcome "junk e-mail" arrived today with these pictures of Jack Alexander's junks and Korean warships, based on illustrations from the Osprey book. Jack made an original and then cast each of the 'spikes' on the Korean Turtle ship and made the small guns for the other Korean ships. So that the Junks can be used across a wide period, he also made 'oar' sections to slip over the gun ports.

I think these pictures are truly remarkable, thanks to Alan for sending the pictures and to Jack Alexander for agreeing to their posting.

Jack Alexander - South Seas Junks

More pictures of Jack Alexander's wargame forces and terrain from a South Seas pirate game. Jack built all the junks, dock area and naval guns along with a Samurai castle based on an Ian Weekly article. The warehouses are a converted saloon from the White City Range of wild west buildings. Everything is in 20mm.

Jack Alexander - Colonial Gunboat

Jack Alexander is the man behind the Jacklex ranges, and also designed the Miltra 1/72 WW11 figures for Bish Iwaszko. Jack's wargaming is still going strong and through Alan I have some pictures for you of his modelling skills, here with his colonial gunboat, followed by a steam launch, and an American Civil War Colonial house. Please note that these are private modelling projects, and are not available commercially or for sale. I have always had a particularly soft spot for Jack's colonial figures and I hope others will also be specially pleased to see these pictures.

Sources, permissions and editorial policy

This site uses a range of sources to provide access to information about wargaming, for the most part from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. These sources are mainly paper based, may be ephemeral (catalogues, price lists, painting instructions etc), and in general are not easily accessible elsewhere.

I am particularly grateful to Don Featherstone and to John Tunstill, who have both given their permission for the reproduction of materials from their ground breaking magazines, respectively Wargamer's Newsletter and Miniature Warfare (and later Miniature Wafare and Model Soldiers).

Where possible I have made efforts to obtain permission for reproduction of any material covered by copyright.

Some of the source material is typescript, may be fragile, and in some cases to scan or photograph it may require the removal of staples and the destruction of the integrity of the original publication.

I have tried to deal with this in a number of ways, scanning or copying and adding as an image, or scanning for optical character recognition to provide text based posts. Where the content is more important than the aesthetic look of the original context, I have also taken the opportunity to make minor edits and layout changes to make the material work better on the screen. In these cases I may have edited for sense, corrected spelling or punctuation (including capitalization and the removeal of the wargamer's apostrophe). In doing this I recognise the advantage of working in an electronic format over the original editor working with typescript).

Of course these changes may lead to new mistakes and I would be grateful for any (polite) alerts to these through the comments system.

It is intended that this site will also include new writing on its subject areas.
